Wilderness Mental Health Worshops

We are pleased to introduce new mental health workshops, which will explore various mental health topics over the next few months. Marissa Morkel a Clinical Psychologist, will lead these interesting and interactive sessions.

Session 1 – Mental Health vs Mental Illness

In this interactive workshop we unpack what it means to be mentally healthy compared to what is defined as mentally ill. Explore how to tell if you are only having a bad day or if it is something more serious.

Learn ways to protect and look after our mental health, and map when it is bad enough to seek help.

The way we interpret difficulty most often determines how we react to it and how it impacts our functioning. Listen to this session to discover the factors that make us more resilient in the face of life challenges and how to cultivate resilience.

Session 2 – Loss and Grief

In this session we discuss the impact of loss and the process of grief. What can we expect of ourselves and others in the grieving period? What are the emotions and behaviours that are typical after a significant loss?

We will map the stages of grief and the impact they may have on our daily lives. We will also look at ways in which to deal with the grieving process and how we can best support ourselves and others in times of need.

Session 3 – The Power of Authenticity

Life is not a one-size-fits-all experience, and neither are people. There is magic in living a life fully and truly you. In this workshop, we will focus on understanding our own uniqueness and the power of this.

Are you more at ease among people or do you prefer solitary activities? Are you guided by your head or heart? How do you optimally process information? How do you decide what is important to spend your time on?

When we focus on our own authentic self we begin to craft a life that deepens our relationship to the world and those around us. It allows us to let go of who we think we are supposed to be and fully embrace who we really are.

Session 4 – Setting Boundaries

In this workshop we will discuss what healthy boundary-setting entails. What are the benefits of setting personal boundaries and how do we achieve this?

Often in our lives we feel the need to draw a line in the sand, but we don’t feel like we are allowed to do so, or even where to begin. We will explore techniques to achieve this and work on understanding why we find this so difficult to implement in our daily lives.

Session 5 – Unpacking Anxiety

Explore the origins and symptoms of anxiety. When our fight and flight mode is activated, it becomes difficult to make rational decisions and we feel overwhelmed. Anxiety is characterised by over-thinking and often feeling mentally paralysed.

Look at ways of managing these feelings, understanding and treating anxiety.
